The Rottweiler as a pet is associated with the word Loyal.
The Rottie - as they are popularly called, is a medium to
large sized robust dog. They are generally black in color
with carefully placed mahogany markings. This breed of dogs
are known for their intelligence and forgiving nature. The
true antecedents of this dog are a little hazy and they
were used as herd dogs in the middle ages. Historians state
that this dog appeared in the little town of Rottweil in
Germany. It appeared to have been left by the Roman armies
during their travels. These are very talented dogs and some
of their extraordinary talents include tracking, herding,
as a watch dog, guarding, police work, carting, competitive
obedience, and schutzhund.
With time, the physical appearance of a Rottweilers has
undergone a transformation. Their invisible aura of
dignity, intelligence, loyalty, humor and versatility has
made it the second most popular breed in America. A well
trained rottweiler is a very quiet, often laid-back pet
that easily adapts to apartment living. However well your
rottweiler may be, the fear instilled in others from a big
dog requires that they are never left unattended especially
in public places.
The Rottweiler takes very well to training. However, the
process f training needs to start when the dog is a small
pup. The dog is inherently calm, courageous with reliable
temperament. Unless this bid size dog is trained well, you
may find it difficult to keep under control a very powerful
beast when he is especially aggressive. Irrespective of
the level of training, these dogs must be kept on a leash
especially in public places as they can be aggressive
towards other dogs. Despite his size, a rottweiler is very
good wit children and can prove to be a great playmate.
Care for a Rottweiler
To ensure that your rottweiler does not become a dreaded
member of the family, you must socialize your rottweiler
puppy with children, other animals and people. Certain
steps that must be taken to ensure a well-behaved and well-
groomed rottweiler are:
o~As for every dog/pet, a complete vaccination course
with regular as required boosters is necessary for good
health. This ensures the dog remains immune to diseases.
De-worming once every three months and usage of de-fleaing
products go a long way in preventive health maintenance.
o~Your rottweiler should be fed with high-grade dog
food. The first ingredient should be meat; crude protein
should be no less than 30 percent and crude fat no less
than 20 percent.
o~Every two to three weeks, nails must be rimmed.
o~A rottweiler should be walked or run at least twice a
day.
Keep your rottweiler on a leash when away from your home.
o~Rottweiler really like to play especially to run, swim
and play catch.
o~Some of the diseases that are lkely to afflict a
rottweiler are hip and elbow dysplasia (a malformation of
the joints), osteochondrosis dissecans (a bone disease that
causes lameness and arthritis), paneosteitis (a rotating
lameness), Von Willebrand's Disease (a bleeding disorder),
bloat, heart disease and allergies.
o~A fully grown adult male rottweiler has an average
height of 24 to 27 inches and weighs between 95 and 130
pounds. Females have an average height of 22 to 25 inches
and weigh between 85 and 115 pounds.
