Why Do People Love Bulldogs?
by James "Bully" Benson
http://www.royalbulldog.com/

Why not? They are one of the world's most beloved pets.
They have great qualities, and a personality like no other
animal.

Friendly, loyal, and really fun to look at, bulldogs are
loved by both children and adults. They are loyal, playful,
and always a joy to look at. Plenty of people have had
numerous bulldogs over their lifetimes, and prefer it over
any other breed.

While they always look great, bulldogs actually come in a
number of different colorings. You will often find white,
brindle, red, fawn and other colors in a bulldog. Sometimes
solid, sometimes patched or spotted, they are all easy to
fall in love with. A fully mature female generally weighs
about 40 pounds, while the male usually is a bit heavier,
averaging around 50 pounds.

Bulldogs have been bred as a pet, as opposed to a hunting
dog. As they get older, they often tend to get a bit lazy,
but, as with any animal, exercise is always good idea for a
bulldog. They do best living in your house, kept out of
extreme weather. When it is hot, be sure to give them
plenty of water. With their thin coat, don't leave them in
the cold too long during the winter.

While not violent by nature, bulldogs make good guard dogs.
They are often intensely loyal to their master and family.
While they will be gentle with the people they know, when
they sense danger to their family, they can become a fierce
rival. They are pretty muscular, and have really strong
jaws which can clamp down on their enemies. It can be a
difficult task to pry them away.

Even though they are good bulldogs, and are often portrayed
in cartoons as violent, bulldogs are often great with kids.
If you raise and socialize them properly, they will put up
with more abuse from kids than most people would. Yet, when
those kids are attacked, your bulldog will guard them with
his life.

It may take some patience to teach your bullie tricks, but
they are fairly intelligent, and love to please their
master. If you don't want to take the time to teach them
real tricks, you can, of course, still play with them, and
pretend that you taught them how. They love to play tug of
war. Of course, as they get older, and tend to lay down
around the house, it is a simple matter to teach them how to
play dead. Just point and say you taught them how to do that.

If you ask a current or past bulldog about their pet, you
will almost always hear about how much fun they are. It can
even be said that a bulldog will help you live longer.
Laughter is said to extend your life, and a bulldog is a
steady source of laughter. When you look for a bulldog of
your own, take the time and effort to find a quality
breeder. They are expensive, and you want to make sure that
they are healthy, with good personality traits. A good
breeder will usually be able to tell you about the dog's
family health background, and their personalities.

Unfortunately, the life of a bulldog is often shorter than
that of most other breeds. The usual lifespan is about
eight to ten years. While they seem healthy and sturdy as a
rock, there are some health problems and concerns common to
the breed. They tend to have hip problems, so you should be
careful when playing with them not to throw them around too
much, which could hurt their hips. Due to their facial
structure, they are prone to breathing problems, and can
overheat when it is hot outside. If they are in a warm
place, be sure they have plenty of water. They also tend to
get irritated in the folds of the skin on their face, and
you will want to make sure that their lovable face is kept
clean.

A bulldog is a great choice for a pet. They will bring you
more joy than just about any other animal you can find.
Just be prepared for people to stop you and your dog on the
street and want to play with them and tell you about their
own bulldog, and how much they love them. After all, with a
face like that, who can resist them?
